Name derivation:

Classification:

Siphomonas  E.G. Pringsheim  1946;  one species has been defined and is currently accepted taxonomically.

Order Chromulinales;  Family Chromulinaceae or Ochromonadaceae (Kristiansen and Preisig 2001).

 

Morphology:

Colony of biflagellate unicells attached to branching stalks.  Food vacuoles containing bacteria often observed.  Stalks stained with oxides of iron and manganese (Guiry and guiry 2016).

 

Similar genera:

Cladomonas, Anthophysa, Siderodendron.

 

Habitat:

Freshwater, in alkaline polluted habitats, attached or planktonic.  Reported only from England and France (Ibid.).
